Hereward the Wake opened up the Hereward Wargames Show with customary clout on Sunday 7th September. It was the second time medieval re-enactor Rory Gibson appeared at the annual event organised by Reuben and Mike and a host of others from Peterborough Wargames Club.
The appearance of Hereward marked the date in the early days of September 1067, during the dark days of the Norman Conquest, the most cataclysmic moment in the history of the English, that Hereward returned from exile and came back to the Fens and mountyed a five year resistance campaign against an oppressive Norman regime.
The Hereward Wargames Show honoured him further by displaying a new wargame 'Hereward's Revenge' based upon Hereward's conflict with Abbot Turold of Peterborough.
The show, the wargame, the re-enactor bring Hereward's deeds back into the folk memory of his own people 958 years later.
